An on-grid solar system — also called grid-tied solar — is the most economical way to lower your electricity bill. It uses solar panels and a grid-tie inverter to power your loads directly during the day and, where applicable, export surplus units to the grid. Because there is no battery, the cost per kilowatt is the lowest of any configuration, making on-grid the default choice wherever the grid supply is reasonably reliable.
How on-grid solar saves money
Your home or business consumes solar power first, reducing the units you buy from the grid. On a net-metering connection, surplus daytime units are exported and offset units you import later; on the 2026 net-billing arrangement, exports are purchased at a notified rate while imports are billed at your tariff. Either way, the biggest savings come from self-consumption — using your own solar power as it is generated.
Is on-grid right for you?
Choose on-grid if your main goal is to cut the bill and your area does not suffer prolonged outages. If you also need backup power during load shedding, a hybrid system adds a battery to the same grid-tied foundation.
Net metering & net billing in Pakistan (2026)
Under NEPRA's Prosumer Regulations 2026, new grid-tied applicants are placed on a net-billing arrangement: the units your system exports to the grid are purchased at a notified buy-back rate, while the units you import are billed at your normal tariff. Existing net-metering agreements generally remain valid on their original terms until they expire. DISCO approval typically takes around 2.5–3.5 months after installation, and connections up to 1 MW on a three-phase supply are eligible to apply.
